The RED exhibit is now online at www.redNU.ca

On May 5, 2023, the Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council announced RED- Remember, Education, Dedicate. RED is an initiative that focuses on remembrance, healing and empowerment of Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) through the unique eye of our Nunavut artists.

The goal is to create a permanent exhibit of works in Nunavut, both in digital and physical spaces. In doing so, the Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council aims to create safe spaces for awareness, dialogue, and healing, while empowering Nunavut’s women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people to speak out against gender-based violence.

For RED, we’re asking Nunavut artists to create meaningful pieces to honour those Nunavut Inuit we’ve lost to MMIWG.

A total of 20 pieces of art will be created for RED - 10 pieces have been commissioned directly and 10 pieces will come from an open call to all Nunavummiut. And that means YOU!

A total of $5000 will be divided between the 10 non-commissioned artists chosen for RED.

Here are the basics:

  • The artwork must reflect the spirit of the RED initiative.

  • The non-commissioned artwork can be created in any medium using any materials that the artist(s) wishes.

  • The art can be written, sung, sculpted, painted, drawn, sewn, physical or digital. Combinations and multi-media art are also accepted.

  • The artwork must be easily transported, displayed, and made to last.

  • All artwork stemming from the RED initiative will be the property of Qulliit unless decided otherwise by the Qulliit Council.

  • In the case of digital art creation, all language elements must be displayed according to Nunavut’s Official Languages Act, in Inuktitut, English, Inuinnaqtun and French.

Interested artists provide their artwork and a completed submission form to Qulliit by March 29, 2023.
