The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) started September 1, 2016 and completed with a final report on June 30, 2019. Qulliit would like to thank all participants in MMIWG National Inquiry for their work, courage and dedication to finding concrete and healing paths to justice for all Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people.

There are 46 Inuit-specific Calls for Justice in the Final Report of the National Inquiry into MMIWG.

There are many underlying causes of violence against Indigenous women and girls. Lack of housing, economic security, and access to services are just some things that make women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people vulnerable to violence.

Inuit women experience violence at a higher rate than other women in Canada, 14 times higher than the national average. Indigenous women are more likely to experience physical or sexual abuse during childhood than non-Indigenous women.

Urban Inuit women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people are particularly vulnerable due to the challenging circumstances they face in urban settings. Access to services, follow-up and support is vital to ensure they are not victims of targeted violence, abduction and trafficking.

Qulliit believes that solutions and healing in Nunavut must be Inuit-led, for Inuit. Our culture, values, history, language, and knowledge must be front and centre as we work to heal and put an end to violence against our sisters.

All levels of government are responsible for implementing the Inuit-specific Calls to Action from the Final Report. Want to learn more? Read the National Inuit Action Plan at: https://www.mmiwg-ffada.ca/
